He didn't need the hippy wagon. In fact, speaking up against the
wrongs in Vietnam cost him dearly.

FWIW, he never threw his own medals anywhere. He placed medals of
other vets who couldn't make it to the rally on the Pentagon steps.

Oh, and there's something else you got wrong those statements he made
about atrocities. He didn't accuse anyone, especially American
soldiers. He *quoted* the confessions of over 150 other Vietnam vets
who had given written and oral testimony of their own misdeeds at an
earlier meeting. He did this to try to get Congress to recognize how
badly the political leadership -- not the soldiers -- was running the
war. The only accusations he leveled were against the politicians.
If you really want to know about his testimony, read it. It's
published in the congressional record. If you want to know what
happened at the Pentagon rally, ask any of us who were there. Not
everyone in attendance was a veteran, though more than a thousand
were and many thousands across the country agreed with those there
that the war needed to be stopped. Kerry was among the more notable
vets mainly because he was the most decorated to speak up against the
war at that point.
