Do you think I've got something against white people in general? :^)
Allow me to clarify this. I consider everyone to be the same. Sometimes in
the heat of the moment someone's beliefs are lost behind defensiveness
and/or anger.
I recall one time when I was doing volunteer work (lay minister) in a prison
in Connecticut. I walked up to the pulpit before a group of about 100 or
150 inmates. I never asked to have officers in the chapel during our
services because their presence had a negative effect on the atmosphere.
This was a medium security facility but we had been going there for years
and I was comfortable with the regular group that came in for our services.
Sometimes one or two CO's would stand by the door but mostly we were on our
own. In my 8+ years of lay ministry we never had an incident get out of
hand.
As I sorted my notes a young man wearing the religious cap of a Muslim asked
in a loud voice, "What's this white boy going to tell us?" I looked up and
he was not smiling. It was obvious he intended to disrupt the meeting to
spread his own message. You could have heard a pin drop. Everyone wondered
how I'd respond.
In prison ministry the unwritten rule is the same as it is for guards and
inmates. If you allow someone to walk over you and don't stand your ground
no one will respect you at all. I picked up the microphone, paused for a
moment and said in a strong, offended sounding tone punctuating each
syllable, "Excuse me!!! Who are you calling 'white?' I'm pink!" The crown
erupted in laughter. Even the would-be heckler couldn't keep from smiling.
Then I said something to the effect that only about two pounds of me is
white and the same amount of him is black. Everything that counts is
underneath the part that sets us apart. He sat back and listened politely
and the service proceeded without further incident. I don't recall if he
came to any more services but I was always able to maintain control and I
think the main reason is anyone who ever met me knows I'm serious about what
I believe. The other side of it was the fact that we only went there to try
to help and the men knew it.
Here in ACA almost no one really knows each other at all. It's like the old
days of CB radio. Everyone's a tough guy and the wimpiest characters -- the
ones the men we dealt with every week would have chewed up and spit out --
post threats and attacks all day long. Pathetic.
Regards,
Robert
