They touched on it at the end: "There are other industry analysts who
contend that Microsoft is simply propping up Toshiba to further its own
aims, like countering the PlayStation and combating the spread of Sun's Java
software."

That's not relevant to my point in quoting the article, namely that
loyalties come and go in the "standards" business.  My personal belief is
that companies often join for a little while just to keep an eye on the
competition.
