RE: New lighting wiring

I sort of guessed that they wouldn't dim but would just come on or go
off =
as the dimmer reached the voltage threshold. I just wondered if this
would=
actually have any detrimental effect on the transformer itself ?

I have tried it with some MR16 sized LED globes - they had a really small
range of motion of the dimmer to go from full to nothing - to be expected
since there is a smoothing cap in the globes to remove flicker so it will
still get the peak voltage they expect down to the point they are only
getting =BD the ac cycle.

Little bit lower and they were out.

I trued a GU10 based mains powered MR16 and the results were... shall we
sa=
y
that smell lingers...

The LED's are in the bathroom so are definitely transformer fed (12v and
on an RCD spur).

Does the minimum load rating still apply with the transformer and how
do I calculate the load of the transformer ?

If the dimmer is ramped up (i.e. slow start like a LD11 does) would the
transformer cope with that or would it better to simply "toggle"
between
0% and 100% ?=20

Transformer based should be ok because the transformer should eat the
leakage current.

The problem are the 230 volt leds because they have a series capacitor
to
drop the voltage so overheat on anything with harmonics.

Ahh yes, forgot about the *minimum* load requirements of an LD11. :-(

That *may* be ok as the overheating problems/catastrophic failures were
to
do with CFL lamps not LEDs. That said there could be problems if the LED
load is below the minimum load of the dimmer - I've seen LEDs flashing
on/off when the dimmer was supposedly in the off state - was a Lutron
leading edge dimmer from their Homeworks system though so an X10 dimmer
may
have a different effect.

Ho Hum... I guess my plan to use an LD11, toggled 0% to 100% (by
Homevision) , as a quite relay to turn on some 12v LED bathroom lighting
(running on a 240v transformer) probably isn't a good idea then.
