David Cunningham, who has a track record in lighting innovation, has filed a
patent on a high efficiency incandescent bulb which uses an interior coating
to block IR. The IR stays within the bulb where it heats the filament, thus
increasing the efficiency. I haven't seen definitive data but have seen
speculation from knowledgeable folks who think it may be more efficient than
CFLs.
