Well that might be. But the French left Indo China after being wiped out at
Dien Bien Phu
That was even after the US paid 80% of the bill. The US left Vietnam (after
signing a peace treaty) for the Vietnamese to defend.
Unlike the French the US didn't go down in defeat in battle after battle.
Vietnam fell after US withdrew support, not by getting stomped by the North
(like France was).
