So you started out as a DIYer?  That explains why you care so much
about doing it right.

As to challenges, ELK is really no more complex to install than any
other.  It just offers more features and options which you can elect
to use or not at your discretion.  The ELK software is east to
master, even for old DIYers like us, Bob.  :^)
