Most of Bass' detractors don't think he is the devil. They just wish he
would become his neighbor in the netherworld. Bass is a gadfly of the first
order, no doubt. He is an unabashed Democratic sycophant. He will post any
anti-Bush bilge he comes across with the zeal of the true believer. Bass is
a stand up guy in the sense that you never in the dark about the positions
he takes on political issues. Running a DIY website flys in the face of
nearly all other business models the other posters here tend to follow. He
is more irksome to many since he doesn't participate in, or submit to, any
regulatory authority. Not that it is absolutely necessary to be regulated to
run an on line business, but it could limit the products and services
offered to some customers and still stay within the law. Many here have
challenged his position on staying outside the regulations, while offering
certain services, like panel programming for instance. So in addition to
tapping into a lot of industry experience,  you get to wade through and
enjoy the flame fest that occurs routinely. The place is different when Bass
is posting regulary and when he is not. The odd thing is the ones that seem
to dislike him most seem to miss him the fastest.
