When we had our new gas fireplace, in a build-out, installed, I had them lay
a couple of lengths of 2-inch plastic pipe through the back of the build-out
(below the level of the fireplace, of course). Through that, I can run just
about anything up to a heavy extension cord. Even if you installed long
lengths of this (cheap) stuff, the gadgets electricians use to fish AC cable
would enable you to drag any kind of cable through it, including (gentle)
bends.
The only downsides I can think of are some dust, and possible use by
mice as a highway system -- avoid infestation by mice :)
