RHC:Nick, concentrating as you do on fire systems, you may be
interested in this. Recently the city of Toronto passed a false alarm
bylaw that involves setting fines of $1000 or more for false fire
dispatches. As a result, local alarm companies are strongly de-
emphasizing smoke detectors on alarm systems due to the hassle with
customers should they be charged for a false trip and dispatch. I
believe CANASA consider this a serious ongoing problem and will be
doing something about it (or at least trying....)

The obvious danger to this is that it will very strongly discourage
fire prevention devices being installed on alarm systems. This IMO is
a very stupid thing to do, and one which has been discarded as not
even worth considering here in Ottawa. The city doesn't ever charge a
client for a smoke detector false alarm since the lives of people take
priority over revenue. It will take the death of someone due to the
negative aspects of this bylaw before city politicians wake up and
eliminate this stupidity.

What are some of these local politicians smoking......???
