You mentioned the expense of the trip in an earlier post.  American tour companies operating in the Amazon charge a ridiculous
markup on their services.  They pay the guides the Brazilian minimum wage, roughly $180 / month.  The boats and lodges are mostly
well-appointed but the cost has long since been amortized.  Prices run from $3500 to over $6000 for a 6 to 9 day excursion.  I was
prepared to pay it but was hoping to locate a better deal through family connections we have.  Tonight all of that changed.

I met someone from Brazil who has connections with an operation out of Manaus.  I got the phone number and will try to contact the
people shortly.  Supposedly, the cost should be less than $1,500 per person, not including travel to/from Manaus, which runs about
$600-800 US.
