In Florida, if you employ 3 or fewer people, you can be exempted from
workmen's comp.  Officers of a corporation can always be exempted.  But
anyone in the "construction industry" with even 1 employee must pay
workmen's comp.  (In 2004 this was applied to individuals as sole
proprietors!  Which led to a lot of subcontract guys incorporating
themselves...)  Farmers can be exempt with 5 or fewer employees and 11
or fewer temporary workers.  A few other fun exceptions: local
governments are *never* exempt, no matter how few employees; homeowners
are always exempt for their domestic servants, no matter how many!
