Neil - It isn't possible to vet new membership requests in terms of
whether they are really xAP interested or not so the current system is
the most effective for spam control.  As I explained in my other reply
after a few posts you will become automatically unmoderated anyway, and
the low activity and urgency of this list isn't I'm sure going to cause
any issues in the meantime.   Not one of your messages has been
moderated on content, ...we do try and keep this a friendly on topic list .
