AT commands - Nokia 6210 phone help?

I am trying to build some automated SMS kit for remote location
monitoring i.e. my lockup with no power /phone lines etc etc.

I know that nokia phones can support AT commands but I can't get the phone
to respond on the PC.

The plan is to use a pic chip with many inputs for smoke, door, heat cold
low battery and send a text message using AT commands from the pic chip to
the phone.

Thus far I have connected the Phone via the DLR3 nokia data cable, started
HyperTerminal and connected to Com1 where the cable is connected type AT
got no reply, downloaded oxygen phone manager connected that via the same
cable and com port and I can see the phone and the messages etc so I know
the cable and port are talking to the phone but I can't talk to it,
searching the web for many hours find people that either say, Yes it's easy
just do what I have done above and they get response and can send SMS the
terminal session or people that gat the same response I get.. nout
response.

So far nokia forums have been of little help to people that have failed,
now questions for the good ppl of UKHA:

A. When I send the ascii letters A and T out via the com1 from
HyperTerminal to the phone should the phone respond?

B. If I used a PIC to do the same via a MAX232 chip would the output to
the phone be identical to the above (i.e. is my testing valid?)

C. Has anyone here done A or B

D. Am I heading down the wrong path?

Many thanks in advance, Stuart
