I'd go WHS too.  I have both and the NAS is no longer plugged in!

Try a homebrew system based around a Mini ITX Intel Atom =A360 for the=20
board and then you just need a ram stick, a case and WHS.  I got an=20
Antec Aria case which is great (I still owe Mark a review which is on=20
my to do list!) - runs at about 50W with 2 x 500Gb HDDs.  The Aria was=20
the only suitable case that I found that would fit 3 Hdds in without=20
modification (4 if you don't want an optical drive) - you'll need a=20
sata card (the atom Mb only has 2 onboard) but the Aria has space for=20
the PCI card.

ps You can get a 120 day eval version of WHS for a fiver from M$ (or=20
from me for free) so if you have a free PC you could put in one of your=20
500Gb drives and try it out.  I did!
