I have had a quick look round about CCTV because I remember having to
look
up the policies on CCTV for work, and thought you may appreciate a few
insights.
Basically the law (as I understand it - I am not a legal expert here)
differentiates between static and active CCTV systems. If your system
cannot
be remotely zoomed or moved and you are recording them only for the
purposes
of providing images to the police or other law enforcement agency then you
do not need to register the camera under DPA.
Basically the DPA is only concerned where you are able specifically
tracking/targeting an individual (such as a member of staff or customer in
a
shop).

My brother wanted to do the same thing but the police told him that
a camera covering the road / pavement outside his house would have
to be registered under the Data Protection Act.
As far as I've been able to discern, though, that is complete
horsesh*t.
The trouble is that it is much easier for the plod to play safe,
rather than actually check their "facts".
