There are two types of RJ45 crimping plugs. One is as you described and
the other is designed for solid core cable. The solid core one is designed
to pierce through the insulation but instead of the spikes going through
the core, they grip the solid wire on either side to make contact.

Both types don't make good contact when used on the wrong core type.
