Possibly a case of the old cosmetic damage = customer damage = beyond
economical repair standpoint - I work in the repair industry (mobile
phones)... *rolls eyes*

I will have an ask about and see if anyone knows who repair ipods (if
anyone is still in the office at this time of year!) - it might be that
there's someone who provide warranty service for Apple and also do
non-warranty repairs, or people who repair them just not under Apple
accreditation..... although given the costs that can be charged for out
of warranty mobile phones, in particular with colour screens and
cameras, the cost could indeed be prohibitive.
