Have a look at

and in particular this

"If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for
the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to
prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently
faulty)"

Where did he buy it from i.e. who's his contract under the Sale of
Goods Act with? If it's not Apple it might be worth going back to the
original retailer.

Citizens Advice and Trading Standard might be the other people who're
of use.
