Hi Alex, welcome to UKHA!

Building an X10 module from scratch can be done, but it's only something
you
would do for your own interest rather than for cost reasons. Here's a
design
based on the ever common 16F84 PIC chip..

The Pic Basic Pro compiler has native X-10 support, so you can roll your
own
more complex apps fairly easily, however, the problem will always be one of
safety. Many of the mains-interfacing circuits you will find on the web
should be pretty solidly condemned for failing to provide an acceptable
level of isolation.

The other thing to consider is that in order to build an X10 device, you
actually need some X-10 devices to test against..
