Then this is very old technology that could have been rolled out with HH
originally!

Isn't there already something using this system to provide the reporting
information to BT? I know when my HH broke, when I called they said yeah we
know your box has spent 24 hours telling us. Nice of them to actually do
something about it instead of making me ring them only to be told that they
couldn't fix it for ages. The box also occasionally does it's own thing and
disables the phone line in the house while it does so and I assume this is
some other form of line reporting.

I had hoped it would actually be always on rather than always on except
when
it's off which is not a huge improvement on the current setup.
