Certainly my standard Sky Amstrad box does not output s-video and I
encountered the same problems as you when trying to go Scart to s-
video. My temporary fix to this was to buy a RGB to S-video converter

now retired this unit though (After about two days!)and gone RGB all
the way through to the plasma in the living room using vandamme 5
core cable.
I intend to re-use the unit though at a later date to give me an s-
video feed from the rgb sources into the av-amp and out to the
bedroom and kitchen where quality is less critical. (Provided my idea
works!)
