What system are you using?

We don't see much activity on here these days so I am wondering exactly
what
people are using for home automation and if over the years it has become
more reliable?

I was chatting with a friend over in the US about this and we got to
talking
about each other's systems and how we found reliability and if we saw any
business in this by offering similar setups to home users. For me I often
get responses from the wife and daughter about something not responding to
button presses. That seems to be the main pain for the system I use and the
reason I am reluctant to offer anything to home users who are not some kind
of nerd or tech user. The systems are just now 100% reliable enough.
Commercial systems like Cbus are but costly to retrofit into an existing
home so more ideal for new builds.

As for own setup, I dumped my old Homeseer based PC about 2 years ago now
and switched to running Node-red on a Raspberry Pi3. The hardware has been
reliable and Node-red is super stable. I've only had one module cause me
grief and I have stopped using that until the developer fixes the issues.

The rest of my system consists of an Amazon Echo and Echo Dot along with 2
Triby units which I use for voice control as well as music. The lights are
controlled by Sonoff or Wemo modules and sockets are a combination of my
own
ESP8266 based controllers (fitted into old ZWave Home Control enclosures)
and Sonoff modules with custom code to support MQTT.

I also have a number of ESP8266 based custom modules that handle weather,
fridge temperatures and movement sensors to control lighting and other
tasks.

Switches are either 433Mhz RF with battery or Enocean wireless energy
harvesting switches in custom 3D printed housings that fit over the
existing
light switches to save them being switched off.

Everything is now controlled internally with an MQTT server on the Pi along
with Node-red. The only external cloud connection is for data logging on
things like Amazon AWS and Thingspeak. The previous system from Homeseer
introduced severe delays from the time you pressed a button to the device
responding. Now it's almost instant.

With this being more reliable than before I have less issues with the wife
and daughter using this when I travel.

Be great to hear what others have used and how you find reliability.
