Interesting question, and something that is very often on my mind....

As a user of several of the various HA technologies, I'm in quite a few
new=
sgroups & Facebook groups et al, and it's quite apparent, and
staggering to=
me, that Every. Single. Day, at least half of the posts are moans about so=
me or other reliability issue...

X just spontaneously stopped working today...
Y has become unresponsive...
Z reports it is offline...

Perhaps it's a skewed signal to noise ratio, in that I guess people aren't
=
inclined to post just because something is working normally, but even so,
j=
ust the sheer number of people reporting the various kinds of reliability
p=
roblems has to point to a major amount of problems out there.

>From what I can see, a good portion of it boils down to 2 main areas:

- Wireless

- Cloud

It seems to me that the wireless technologies just are not solid enough to
=
be relied upon, and the same is true for cloud-based services when one
read=
s of an almost weekly tendency for cloud service outages. My experience is
=
obviously skewed toward the technologies that I use, but not a day goes by
=
when I don't read dozens of posts about SmartThings and Zigbee/Zwave
proble=
ms.

Conversely, some of the tech I use, - CBUS for one, as previously
mentioned=
, is rock solid 100% reliable. Never.... Let me say that again... Never,
ha=
ve I pressed a CBUS button and had the associated device not respond as
exp=
ected.... And I've been using CBUS for about 15 years... can anyone
honestl=
y say that about any wireless HA technology, past or present.

Others that I put in the same basket are:
Comfort, 99% reliable... again in my house for at least a dozen years, had
=
a tiny amount of problems with it that hadn't been caused by my careless
us=
e of power tools...
Sonos, up until recently I've been an evangelist for this tech, and in
trut=
h it's still brilliant, however, I have unfortunately lost faith in the
new=
management over at Sonos thanks to some recent behaviour, and I would not =
recommend anyone to buy into the Sonos ecosystem now, and I will possibly
g=
et out of it if/when an equally capable alternate presents itself. (or
Sono=
s implodes, which may be just as likely).

I have Amazon Echo's... interesting toys, still very much a gimmick, I
woul=
d have them again, if only because they're so cheap, but it's success rate
=
is FAR from 100%
I used to run Homeseer, but I gave up on that 5-6 years ago.

I have neither the time, the patience, or the inclination to roll my own
so=
lutions these days, so all I am aiming for is something I can unbox, plug
i=
n, configure ONCE, and have it work as it should for the rest of its (or
my=
) natural life. It has to be as good as what it replaces - my parents have
=
entirely mechanical lightswitches, some of the switches have been in-situ
f=
or over 30 years, and yet, they just work, first time, every time, all the
=
time. Nothing less is good enough if HA is going to properly become
mainstr=
eam.

All IMHO of course.

Subject: [ukha_d] What system are you using?

We don't see much activity on here these days so I am wondering exactly
wha=
t people are using for home automation and if over the years it has become
=
more reliable?

I was chatting with a friend over in the US about this and we got to
talkin=
g about each other's systems and how we found reliability and if we saw
any=
business in this by offering similar setups to home users. For me I often =
get responses from the wife and daughter about something not responding to
=
button presses. That seems to be the main pain for the system I use and
the=
reason I am reluctant to offer anything to home users who are not some kin=
d of nerd or tech user. The systems are just now 100% reliable enough.
Comm=
ercial systems like Cbus are but costly to retrofit into an existing home
s=
o more ideal for new builds.

As for own setup, I dumped my old Homeseer based PC about 2 years ago now
a=
nd switched to running Node-red on a Raspberry Pi3. The hardware has been
r=
eliable and Node-red is super stable. I've only had one module cause me
gri=
ef and I have stopped using that until the developer fixes the issues.

The rest of my system consists of an Amazon Echo and Echo Dot along with 2
=
Triby units which I use for voice control as well as music. The lights are
=
controlled by Sonoff or Wemo modules and sockets are a combination of my
ow=
n ESP8266 based controllers (fitted into old ZWave Home Control
enclosures)=
and Sonoff modules with custom code to support MQTT.

I also have a number of ESP8266 based custom modules that handle weather,
f=
ridge temperatures and movement sensors to control lighting and other
tasks=
..

Switches are either 433Mhz RF with battery or Enocean wireless energy
harve=
sting switches in custom 3D printed housings that fit over the existing
lig=
ht switches to save them being switched off.

Everything is now controlled internally with an MQTT server on the Pi
along=
with Node-red. The only external cloud connection is for data logging on t=
hings like Amazon AWS and Thingspeak. The previous system from Homeseer
int=
roduced severe delays from the time you pressed a button to the device
resp=
onding. Now it's almost instant.

With this being more reliable than before I have less issues with the wife
=
and daughter using this when I travel.

Be great to hear what others have used and how you find reliability.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">We
don&#8217;t see much activity on here these days so I am wondering
exactly what people are using for home automation and if over the years it
has become more reliable?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">I
was chatting with a friend over in the US about this and we got to talking
about each other&#8217;s systems and how we found reliability and if we
saw any business in this by offering similar setups to home users. For me
I often get responses from the wife and daughter about something not
responding to button presses. That seems to be the main pain for the system
I use and the reason I am reluctant to offer anything to home users who are
not some kind of nerd or tech user.
The systems are just now 100% reliable enough. Commercial systems like Cbus
are but costly to retrofit into an existing home so more ideal for new
builds.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">As
for own setup, I dumped my old Homeseer based PC about 2 years ago now and
switched to running Node-red on a Raspberry Pi3. The hardware has been
reliable and Node-red is super stable. I&#8217;ve only had one module
cause
me grief and I have stopped using that until the developer fixes the
issues.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The
rest of my system consists of an Amazon Echo and Echo Dot along with 2
Triby units which I use for voice control as well as music. The lights are
controlled by Sonoff or Wemo modules and sockets are a combination
of my own ESP8266 based controllers (fitted into old ZWave Home Control
enclosures) and Sonoff modules with custom code to support MQTT.<br>
<br>
I also have a number of ESP8266 based custom modules that handle weather,
fridge temperatures and movement sensors to control lighting and other
tasks.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US">Switches are either 433Mhz RF with battery or
Enocean wireless energy harvesting switches in custom 3D printed housings
that fit over the existing light switches to save them being switched
off.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US">Everything is now controlled internally with an
MQTT server on the Pi along with Node-red. The only external cloud
connection is for data logging on things like Amazon AWS and Thingspeak.
The previous system from Homeseer
introduced severe delays from the time you pressed a button to the device
responding. Now it&#8217;s almost instant.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
lang="EN-US">With this being more reliable than before I have
less issues with the wife and daughter using this when I
travel.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span
