I started building my own system 11+ years ago because nothing quite did
what I wanted. In those 11+ years it has had less than 60 minutes down
time. My background is in real-time systems design though. I also develop
on a warm stand-by and have a cold stand-by machine ready to go.&nbsp;
It&#39;s all written in Java and I have linked many bespoke Arduino
devices to do things like thermostats, NFC, keypads, sensors,
etc.&nbsp; I also use Z-Wave and some off-the-shelf kit like Philips
Hue bulbs. I started out building a technology abstraction layer so I have
no ties to anyone particular technology and can swap out old ones and
replace them with new ones if required. I&#39;ve developed my own
natural language interface and many advanced features. It&#39;s still
got a long way to go though.&nbsp; You can follow my smart home on
twitter :-) <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank"
href="https://twitter.co
m/smartest_home";>https://twitter.com/smartest_home</a><br><br>I&#39;ve
focused on stuff that
improves our quality of life. The technology is just a means to an end and
I&#39;m always aiming for the best user experience possible. Most of my
home is zero touch, it has all the information and context to make the best
decisions and just works around us. I&#39;ve got loads of projects in
the pipeline to add new stuff and looking forward to the day when I can
work on this stuff full time :-)
