I guess you could also illuminate the clear layer with some led's but

need a transformer etc if fed from the mains.

I've actually been wondering if a laser cut acrylic solution might be
worka=
ble, 3 4mm layers, that actually replaced the switch cover itself, the
scre=
w layout on a standard UK light switch is a known fixed quantity.
