RE: Re: Cloud backup/archiving?
The cost of a DLT is high, but not as high as when the drives were DEC
TK50's on a VAX :) We used to get a whole 50Mb on these tapes in the 90's,
the pace of technology :) What's the current capacity, the last ones I used
were about 40Gb, have they improved on that?
The drive that failed us was a DAT drive and reporting OK in the logs, but
was so far out of alignment it chopped part of the stripe off the bottom of
the tape so recovery depended on where the file was actually written,
headers always read OK so no problem was noticed until it was too late.
After this, our junior had the job of verifying readability of every
server's Thursday tape (posted to us on Fridays) each Monday morning (20
sites with between 1 & 4 servers per site!)

No I don't - they are very expensive!
I do regularly restore from the tapes using the same machine though (when I
need to unarchive various files). So I know the tapes are written OK from
this drive (do a full verify too) - I guess it is possible due to alignment
and other issues that only a particular drive can read tapes created by
itself?

Adding to costs, but do you have an alternative DLT to confirm you can read
the tapes? I used to work for a company who didn't verify their tapes were
readable and after a theft were unable to read the tapes on an alternative
drive as the original was faulty (even a specialist recovery company gave
up
saying the original tape drive was so out of alignment their custom
designed
solution couldn't read the tapes)

Yes, good points. I do have a DLT drive for archiving anyway.
I guess the other significant factor on cloud backup is speed of restore -
could be pretty slow for OS type backups. Maybe really only good for
personal files backup.
