RE: [OT] PBX in a Flash - choppy sound in a VM ?

I've used a mix - old BT and Siemens phones on the SPA3000 - work OK
althou=
gh I've had some problems getting DTMF to work from the old BT phones.

I've done a lot of research into IP phones and looked at the Snom M3 / new
=
M9 etc but in the end went for a Siemens S685IP and added an additional
(ne=
w model) SL78H handset onto it. This handset is the new funky metal one
wit=
h large colour display - very nice although a bit angular for holding for
l=
ong periods - bit uncomfortable. They have Bluetooth etc so you can sync
ea=
sily to outlook etc for the phonebook. The SL78H isn't sold as an IP phone
=
but when paired with the S685IP base, works in exactly the same way with
fu=
ll IP functionality (AFAICT) - very nice indeed and highly recommended :)

They are true IP phones but the base also has an analogue interface so you
=
can switch between IP and PSTN. Can also make 2 simultaneous IP calls
(plus=
a third PSTN call I think - but need to check). Seem to work well with Ast=
erisk so far - done a fair bit of initial testing but still more to do
befo=
re I buy some more handsets to replace all of the home phones (maybe
anothe=
r 2 handsets). Unfortunately, the base doesn't allow Asterisk access to
the=
PSTN line like the SPA3000/3102 but it's useful as a failover if the IP sy=
stem goes down for some reason.

There are a load of SPA3000 clones from HK on Ebay- but I steered clear as
=
there were a few reports of problems here and there. I went for an
addition=
al SPA3102 which is exactly the same (although newer firmware) but has a
ro=
uter built in (which I turned off). Got a good price of =A346.16 + Vat
from=
broadbandbuyer.co.uk

Setup of the SPA3000/3102 can be problematic as you have to get every
setti=
ng right - and there are hundreds of settings! Following those guides and
c=
areful selection of settings between the various guides out there is
import=
ant, especially when it comes to UK specific settings.

Each handset can be setup with it's own SIP account (up to 6 I think) - so
=
each logs into asterisk as a separate extension - then you can do whatever
=
you like with call groups/ hunt groups etc.

Don't think they support paging though - only the desk phones do that
AFAIK=
- but I did buy an Aastra 57i dek phone which is superb and has custom XML=
support for Asterisk - so you get all the features and directories / visua=
l voicemail etc etc etc - very cool.

Paul.
