Apple certainly succeed in creating passionate users, don't they :-)

I'm not in the business of defending Apple. I was surprised that they
apparently updated iTunes specifically to screw the Pre, it seemed
unnecessarily vindictive (given the personalities, perhaps it is
personal). And it is annoying when cables etc don't work with the new
stuff, been caught out myself there. I don't know whether that is
because they have changed some aspects of the connector for other
reasons, or whether they are acting simply to exploit a near monopoly
position in MP3 players through 3rd party licensing.

If they are exploiting a monopoly position then the wheel will turn
and it will bite them in the end, whether by legal action or by hubris
and complacency. Which would be a pity, because IMHO they do make
excellent stuff, especially if you are content to live inside the
Apple universe (a Faustian pact perhaps).
