Recommendations for noise cancelling headphones...

Currently got a pair of Sony active noise cancelling headphones that
are about eight years old and starting to fall apart.

I'm looking replace them, and would prefer some that use ear buds
instead, should I stick with active noise cancellation or are things
like the Sennheiser CX500 good enough for long haul plane journeys?

Also does anyone have any recommendations as to what I should get?
