My parents bought a 9300 over Christmas, I was disappointed with the
guide
and a little quirkiness, but they are finding it OK so perhaps it's alright
for non-tekkies (not those on here!).

Having used XP MCE for a couple of years (and lost a lot of hair!),
currently have MediaPortal on test and it's working like a dream.
Scheduling
could be better, but the For The Record add-on does just about everything
you could want.
