Disk recovery software

Does anyone have any recommendation for harddisk recovery software. I
have a disk that spins up, however Vista/XP cannot read the contents
and wants to format it. Unfortunately there is data on the disk that I
would like to recover. I *think* I need something that will try and
by-pass the NTFS/FAT table and try and read the disk directly. Any
idea?
