The absolute first thing to do is to take a sector based image backup of
the
disk. I use ghost32.exe as all our work laptops have it and this was my
work
laptop.

There are a number of recovery tools out there but I got the whole lot back
using the free and very cool Testdisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
on the last disk i tried.
This had the same error you have- I have also had good results with file
scavenger (but that isn't free).
