I've no idea what the LAN socket is for, but the Java reference is
most likely due to the use of Java to encrypt Blu-Ray disks, and not
an indication that the player can run custom code.

The encryption is horrendous - many players take up to a minute to
start playing a disk because of it. It's a typical case of Sony
sticking it to the legitimate consumer while completely failing to
reduce piracy - Blu-Ray encryption can be easily removed using
Slysof's AnyDVDHD (including this Java-based BD+ encryption that was
supposed to take 10 years to crack).

Which reminds me, if anyone feels they might need to decrypt Blu-Ray
disks in the future (for streaming from a home server, for example),
you should get a copy of AnyDVDHD now - in the new year, Slysoft are
changing their pricing to an annual subscription basis. People who
buy it before then will the updates for free.
