NAS ...

Still, maybe ... just maybe ... 'XP should be more forgiving, more
backward compatible ... just maybe it should exist in a less chaotic
environment, where things work with things ... where the user, and what
he / she id trying to do, is the focus ...

sorry ... today, at work, I was trying to play a DVD in 'XP, to show
people something ... and I still can't believe how difficult &
distracting & time-consuming it was ... how much of a fight it was ...
... unbeliveable ... totally, totally, unbelieveable !

>Well ... after the various musing, I'll be going the NAS route now -
because, of course, the media-server dropped-dead within a week of
moving to 'XP ... turns-out the ole Highpoint Rocket Raid 404 card
really doesn't like 'XP !! ... it's the usual highpoint schtick - 'fails
doing DMA transfers under heavy load: and makes it an absolute hound
to recover the data. I'm basically waiting 'til next pay-day, then I
reckon I'll go the 2Gb terastation route ... quite ironic ... the
geriatric P3 NT4 box has been super-stable & fast for a good couple of
years now, and moving to 'XP hosed it in a week
... (Ian Lowe)

Maybe that says something about 'XP ...

(was it 'Home or 'Pro, btw ?)

'Pro, not that it matters in this instance - crash-dump analysis shows
without a shred of doubt that it's the highpoint driver to blame. It
causes a BSOD when it attempts to do a large number of DMA transfers.
