That would be it.

Generally wired-IR follows a universal format so that the data
exchange is compatible between different products. But some brands
develop their own propietry standards.

Take a look at Xantech or Niles kit to get a better understanding of
this. I beleive both have the capability to integrate to branded
devices.

I have a Xantech wired touchscreen and IR receiver which I can use
to control, Sky, Sony TV and X-10. I plan on buying a Pioneer Plasma
in the next few months, so I would need to buy a special component
to get it to talk to a Pioneer's SR.
