Simple answer?  You don't.

Well I'd certainly disagree with that! I didn't get into HA for the
gadgets and tbh, I'm not that much interested in the vast majority of
them either. I injured my back a few years ago and had trouble doing the
little things ... like getting out of bed to turn a TV or light on.

Even the very simplistic HA I implemented made a phenominal difference
to me in those first few months. My mother is severely arthritic and as
a result, I implemented some basic X10 kit for her as well, combined
with an all-in-one remote. The quality of her life (being able to switch
the light or fire on instead of waiting until it was too dark or she was
too cold to wait any longer) has improved considerably.

So it may be simplistic compared to many of the implementations by
people on this list, but I would have to argue that it is indeed needed.
