David,

thats an excellent example of how it should work and also what the o.p.=20
was after I think.  Best way to accomplish this is with small=20
intelligent devices that do there job *but* also can talk to the outside=20
world and give some extended functionality.

Take a fire alarm for example. On its own it monitor smoke or whatever=20
and sounds an alarm when it is detected. If not hooked up to anything it=20
just does its job. If attached to a bus of some kind  new functionality=20
can be available. Check battery, test, sound central alarm device on=20
alarm, start fan on alarm etc etc.

Also with the intelligence distributed a central falure will not take=20
the complete system out.
