I use this approach to stream my tivo over the internet for access
from anywhere. Windows Media Encoder is a great tool, that can do a
lot, bit fiddly to setup but not too bad considering what it does!

only downfall is only media player can receive the stream.  Need to
look at other options for streaming to try and cut microsoft out of
the picture a little bit!!

can also be used for webcams, any video sources or even normal audio
sources
