[OT] Strange PC problems

Sorry chaps, lots of head scratching here, need your accumulated wisdom
again. My network connection (100BaseT) on one of my PCs has gone
bonkers - it accesses the LAN ok for the purposes of calling the
internet, and other PCs on the LAN can see it and interrogate its files
etc. However, it can't see any LAN devices, keeps telling me the
network connection is 'not present or not started'. Any clues??

Also, I have a duff CD drive - works fine for five minutes after a
re-boot, then dies. Changed the cable, the drive and the IDE socket it
connects to, still the same. Is this a knackered motherboard, or
something easier?

Ta much
Martin
