On the other hand, I've got an uplighter that can be dimmed (via an inline
control box with a slider on it), I just pushed the slider to max and
plugged it into an LM12U X10 lamp controller and plugged that into the
wall.
It's been working fine and dimming for a couple of years - no mods needed.

No, not in my experience. You'll have to open the control unit and
join the two live wires together using a terminal block, thus
bypassing the inbuilt dimmer.
