CREATING DVDs

Hi,
I am (still) trying to create DVDs using music (MPEG) video files
from my hard drive.
I have used both NERO Ultra 6.3 and also EASY CD/DVD Creator 6 and
have obviously realised that I must be doing something wrong, but
WHAT?
The main problem appears to be that my PC "freezes" when the
files
are being "converted", everything appears to be going fine for
over
an hour or so but then everything locks up.
I was advised that the problem could be with my computer's fan but
have had this checked out and apparently that is fine.
I have now been told that these MPEG files must be "converted"
before using either of these packages? If so to what and using what?
Basically I am now very, very confused about the whole thing, surely
there must be a simply solution to my problem otherwise these
packages would not be as popular as they are.
I'm sorry to be so long winded about this and I would really
appreciate some help finding a solution.
My basic system details are:
XP2700+ AMD Athlon processor
120GB hard drive
512MB DDR Ram Memory
64MB S3 AGP Graphics
Windows XP Home
many thanks,
Brian
