Whilst investigating the wiring in my house (15 years old) I've found the
odd bit of double insulated single core (with earth). Not enough to prevent
me doing what I needed, but just the occasional run.

Yes, it's true that you can get double sheathed singles but in 25 years of
'sparking', I've never seen them used to fully wire a house. Infact, I can
only think of one instance that I've seen double insulated single core
cable
used at all.
If Chris's house has been wired in double insulated singles, he's one
unlucky bloke!

Not necessarily; you can get single core that is double sheathed in
exactly the same was as T&E. The modern versions are single core
plus earth...

But whatever; I think your analysis of degree of stuffed-ness is
about the size of it.
