Re: X10 - how ?

I realise that X10 is more hobby kit - but I don't need a complex system -
just some basic switching and dimming with remote controls and a PC
interface. X10 is almost there - but to make it "Guest
Friendly", I'll have
to roll a couple of my own modules (but that's OK - I'm into that kind of
thing anyway).

As has been pointed out, the C-Bus system would do what I want, and is far
more reliable than X10, but I don't need industrial strength reliability in
the home - I won't be relying on it for any safety critical or security
functions.

Obviously if you're selling HA to consumers, you need it too work 100%, or
you waste all your profit in support calls. I'm fitting my own system to
my
own house, so I'll be doing my own support :-)

If the C-Bus system was closer in price to X10 (say no more than 30%
higher), I'd probably go for it, but as I say, I think it's overpriced at
the moment (although I'd be interested to see how much it goes for in the
US!)

Subject: RE: [ukha_d] X10 - how ?

I may be unpopular for saying it, but I see X10 as "hobby" kit,
and CBus /
Polaron / Lutron etc as pukka professional gear. and that's fine, as long
as
you don't expect professional performance from "hobby" equipment.
From your
original question, I think your hitting the limits of equipment in that
price bracket. To get greater functionality is now probably going to
involve
spending more money :-/

You will pay a premium for a hardwired system, but what are you going get
is
increased functionality and a more integrated system. Although it costs
more
IMHO it's better *value* :-)

You can still take it with you should you move, it's just a bit more
involved than unplugging a few modules. If you've got an X10 Din rail
system, swapping out that, or CBus is probably a wash.

Just my 2p, HTH,

Tim H.
