This is where I think the problem is. The inverter is only putting out a
small voltage and isn't triggering the relay. However, not knowing about
these things, I wouldn't know what part to buy. The choice in RS was large
and unhelpful to me.

I still can't understand why making the contact at the genny end works, but
putting in a relatively short cable means that it doesn't work. I guess
that
they means the voltage is very low indeed or the tolerances are very tight.
