One of the most exciting options which opens up with a full TCP/IP
stack is the option to use multicast or broadcast. Every device on
the network can be simultaneously aware of device status (or issue
commands to change a device status) without the need for a
centralised controller (good for resilience) and without the need for
point-to-point IP address configuration (good for ease of
installation/use). Of course, such a scheme can run in parallel with
HTTP/XML style interfaces, so you can have your cake and eat it ;-)
