Whats the feasibility of the same controller hardware being able to work
as
a simple bridge between PC land and the Displays, then being modded
(whether
by replacing the MPU, re-flashing, SICP or whatever) to take on more
"smarts" as the project develops?

I think I am being convinced to put the doomsayer cloak and bell to one
side..
