I
bought mine on local computer fair, paid £90. Was sceptical at the
begining
(because of price), but turned to be working fine.
If you
can afford, go for APC. I think that's the only one whose drivers are
already on
install CDs of Win2000. I am not sure for XP, but should be there
too.
So
just plug it in and that's it.
Regards,
Nik
Yep, I need a bigger, more intelligent
UPS! The one I'm using can be demoted to the TiVo, so that's no
problem. I know it's been posted a gazillion times before, but can
someone point me in the direction of a cheap UPS
supplier?
Thanks
Pete

(ukha_d) UPS
Peter, UPS is usually connected to PC via serial
(non-standard) cable. At least mine is (APC). It can then pass details
about power to PC (about battery, logs etc.). There is a software,
Powerchute, (which I don't use) which starts shutting down windows
properly
after configured period of time, to prevent crash when battery dries
out. I have Win2000, so I don't know about XP. On my UPS, I have five
leds which indicate how much UPS is loaded. I have 700VA UPS and
connected
server, network switch, ADSL modem, and possibly few more little
devices.
My UPS has 4 sockets and I connected power strip on one of them. Still
it's
showing that it's loaded less then 20%. I don't have monitor there. I
think that mine can last more than 15 min on batteries, and because
I never
had such a long outage, I never bothered installing PowerChute. My UPS
serves me as a voltage regulator as well, because it shows me that
in 70%
of the time it's cutting voltage because it's too high. Strange,
because I'm in London, in a new building and I asumed that power supply
should be stable and within the specs. Hope this gives you some
idea. Nik -----Original Message----- From: peter.white@xxxxxxx

It is
up to date, but that wouldn't make any difference - the UPS
isn't very clever - it's not connected to the PC in any way (other
than
power).

XP
crash when connected to a UPS?

Is your installation fully up to
date from windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

RE: [ukha_d] UPS
IME on XP, IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL means a
device
driver has blown up. That could either be the UPS driver having a
fit,
or a driver for one of the USB devices getting upset when the USB
devices power off. Best way to find out is to unplug everything and
test
powering off.

Could this be a conflict of IRQ's? Not an XP expert but
it
sounds like something wrong along those lines. Perhaps the UPS is
trying
to fire off an IRQ events to tell the system that the powers gone,
but it conflicting with something?
Just a stab in the dark
(excuse the pun).
