Something else has failed causing the resistor to overheat.

If you just replace it, the new one will do the same.

Get an estimate for a repair, or just scrap it and get a new one.

Guys

My TV started smoking tonight (It's 7 years old - shocking!).

I just about know one end of a soldering iron from the other, but I'm no
electrical engineer, so I'd appreciate some advise. This is obviously a
prime
opportunity to buy a new telly with full permissions from SWMBO, but before
doing that, I'd like to know whether the repair would cost much.

Basically, it's a 7 year old Nokia 28" widescreen. It started to pop
and
fizz,
though the picture was fine until switched off. Took the back off, no sign
of
burning, so switched it back on. At this point, one of the resistors (I
assume
this is what it is) started glowing red hot, undoubtedly the source of the
smoke. This was the case at stand-by and with the screen on. I was just
about
to cut the offending 'bit' out and run down to Maplins when I thought
whether
this was actually doing what it should do, and that there may be a problem
elsewhere?

Any advise? The hot part looks (to me) like a fat resistor (about 8mm dia,
and
about 18mm long), with pale grey bands at each end and a white centre. It
doesn't appear to be in the high-voltage area of the PCB. I can probably
get a
photo of it if it helps.

Thanks

Pete
