I think I might have an explanation for his crazy price.

When we had our house re-wired I tried to get the electrician to also run
cat5 and coax but he wanted 30 quid a run.  Another electrician wanted 50
quid a run which is what he charges to add a run / socket onto existing
wiring.  At 30 quid a run and 1500 quid materials it comes to 8000 quid.

I did negotiate on the basis of location rather than run as it is easier to
run 4 cables to one location, than four runs to different location.  This
drematically reduced the quote but it was still two much so I ran them
myself.
